Sometimes these numbers are hard to comprehend, sometimes they bring a smile to my face, sometimes they make me want to scream. Each move has ended up being an experience that has left us with great memories, great restaurants, and great friends.
Many times over the years people have wondered why we are packing up and heading out again. Many times we had no answer that made sense to our family and friends. We just truly felt it was what we were supposed to do. Looking back on all these experiences we can see that God directed our steps and put us in each place for a specific reason, whether it be to deal with a medical issue, be impacted by godly friends, or to be an encouragement to someone walking through a tough patch.
We have learned many things through all these uprootings. The most important lesson we have learned is that if we keep God at the center of our marriage and our parenting, we will be ok. We have learned to be content with each other and content with what we have. We have learned that nothing in this world is forever and it is important to be flexible and able to start over. We have taught our son how to not get attached to any one thing because nothing lasts forever, except for God’s love for us and our love for him. We have learned jobs and people don’t define us. We are defined by who we are in Jesus.
We have held on to Proverbs 16:9 which tells us “we can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” We can map out how we think our life will turn out and where we will be in 3-5 years. But, God ultimately determines the steps we take. We can either fight against what He is telling us and live with the consequences, or we can go buy some packing tape and boxes, strap on our seatbelt, and get ready for the new adventure that God has so perfectly planned for us. There may be struggles and adversity along the way but when we hold on to each other and Him, we will find more great restaurants, new friends, and best of all make new memories to last a lifetime!1
